Thobekile was born and bred in Kwa-Zulu natal, her unpleasant upbringing made her strong and more determined to reach to the top in everything she does. She did not know that she has a beautiful singing voice until she joined the Student Christian Movement at high school.
This helped her discovered the diva in her, she did not look back she joined the Apostolic Faith Mission and became a hot property among the evangelists, when ever there was a crusade (tent) around Kwa-Zulu Natal she would be invited to mesmerize the people with her sweet soprano voice and her energetic dance moves.
Her involvement with two of the most influential Evangelists (Ps S.D Gumbi and Ps N.J Sithole) of KZN paved her way to stardom by introducing her to another singing sensation: Hlengiwe Mhlaba, In 2007 Hlengiwe invited Thobekile to sing just one song together, during the live recording of her Live DVD in Durban: Playhouse. Together they rocked the stage that was the night on which Thobekile’s solo career was born.
The Debut Album:
Since that magic collaboration, the pressure from fans became unbearable. By popular demand Thobekile’s debut album was released and she simply titled it UTHEMBEKILE (You are faithful).
This was a job well done by ,Sipho Makhabane and Hlengiwe Mhlaba who both produced the project. The experts defined it as beautifully home brewed gospel music, the album with both worlds in mind:
The oldies listened and sang along because of the traditional renditions and the young could listen, sang along and dance to the energetic beats in all the songs. At the end of the twelfth track all were blessed in spirit. Hlengiwe Mhlaba was featured on three tracks in this album. The style of singing and instrumentation is something that has always been there In the country most popular among the evangelists and their followers, only hidden to the urban communities.
After taking a much needed break, Thobekile has returned to the air waves, defiling every myth that dynamites come in small packages, she is one prominent dynamite, she had dropped another bomb, Her new album is titled Yehla Mlilo.
This is a continuation of the journey she began with her fast growing fan base from all corners of the country, Those years of singing at the top of her voice in the dusty tents were a period of training, perfecting her stage presence and voice techniques, for this time of her life. She is very grateful to Hlengiwe for not undermining the style of her gospel and to Sipho “The Big Fish” Makhabane for believing in her talent.
