Tshepiso Motaung

Born 36 years ago in Katlehong (Gauteng). Together with his three siblings were raised in a family which appreciated Music by their Christian parents Pastor Secra and Mme Merica Motaung, His parents had major influence on his choice of music by introducing Christ to his young life and he never looked back , he embraced the gospel music with great passion.

When other teenagers were playing all sorts of games in the fields, Tshepiso was already handling microphones and church gatherings. His first song was with the Motaung Family Quartet which was comprised of Pastor Motaung(his dad) and his children, as a preacher he had the opportunity to give them the lime light when ever he was invited to deliver the sermon, beside the church the group get invitations to perform at weddings and conferences.

Mama Ellen Mothope had her own reasons for teaching this young boy how to play the Piano, she wanted some one who can play the music during Women’s Fellowships, little did she know that she was giving birth to one of the musicians that the Church as a whole will benefit from. To his skill as a brilliant vocalist she added the piano player, now Tshepiso was ready to play for the ladies.

After few years of serving in the family choir, together with friends Tshepiso formed another powerful six member group, they called themselves Saved to Serve, the impact of their music was felt by all who attended their concerts , they were one of THE Gospel groups in the East Rand, admired by young people of their time. Unfortunately the group did not survive the challenges of Music Industry; other members lost focus and concentrated on other things out side the music scene. But Tshepiso’s journey had to continue, his spirit was never broken by all this, he had to carry on singing. TTP which stands for Tshepiso Thomas and Papi was another group which he formed with his two friends, this one gave birth to another eighteen member group called The Book of Acts, This group kept on growing in numbers and influence, they were known all over the country, even tried their hand in recording their music but never succeeded.

They held music workshops and praise and worship concerts all over Gauteng. 1993 Tshepiso enrolled for the two year course with FUBA Academy to further his Musical skills, where he learned intensively about the theoretical and practicalities of the art of singing, 1995 he again enrolled with Pretoria university of technology to learn more about Opera Music which obviously did not appeal to him, as a result he dropped out just after three months. He is reputed to trail praise and worship leaders, after every meeting with him young people are motivated to rise up and shine for their Lord, this is the result of his dedication and serious spirituality that he oozes on stage. In 1997 God opened ways for Thepiso when one of his best friends Pastor Thomas started preaching in and around Kwa –Zulu Natal, his ministry opened new channels for Tshepiso to minister in those parts of South Africa. Among other churches he ministered in was AFM Eskhawini where he met Hlengiwe Mhlaba who was the member of that church, talk of small world, they both did not know that their routes were leading them to one point, (Big Fish Music).

Few months before his wedding, The Book of Acts collaborated with choirs from other local denominations to prepare for the big day, Tshepiso’s wedding reception will remain the memorable one, that was the night, The well known Khathorus Mass Choir was born with the membership of more than 100 young people, this one was a choir which brought about positive change to the churches in the area, unity and love reigned among the leaders , he is still married to the love of his life Mbali Motaung. Tshepiso was comfortable to serve the lord when ever and where ever but the growing number of his fans felt it was not enough, he could not take the pressure any more, every one who came in to contact with his talent, wanted him to go solo, pastors, friends, family , well known musicians could not stand to see him singing for small audiences, Finally when Sipho Makhabane offered him a deal all made sense . Big Fish Music formely known as Amanxusa Music Production has done it again, Mr. Big Fish himself can proudly confirm that the stable has signed Tshepiso Motaung first solo album, with him as the producer, the aroma of this album is felt by all, The album is titled SIHLANGENE, It appeal to everyone young, old, Christians and non Christians, there is no way audience can sit down and just listen, something is bound to happen when listening to this album, it is a life changing experience. Another life changing experience came when Tshepiso Motaung recorded his live DVD on the 3rd of April 2009 in Deveyton at his Oasis of Life Family church, the traffic was uncontrollable as early as 14H00 midday people were already anticipating to be in the auditorium, 17hoo ,it was fully packed, the shoot only states around 20H00, and what a night.

The product will only be available from jume 2009.but the pressure from the people is unbearable,. Tshepiso had a privilege of working with the cream of the crop of the music industry, Jabu Nkabinde engineered the sound, and Sipho Makhabane produced the album. It is a difficult task to single out one track to say is better than the other, because every track is special and best in its own way, Tshepiso say “this is a unique and heart influenced album, it ministers diversely, worshippers are accommodated, it offers praise renditions and those who are going rough patches of this life , the music in the album is giving hope and encouraging people to press on” And now is time for nations to arise and shine with Tshepiso Motaung for the glory of the Lord is upon him. The release of this album came at the right time when the Gospel artists are recognized by the nation of South Africa. Sihlangene was nominated for the Best New Comer at the Gospel Crown Awards which was held in Durban at the end of the month of August(2008). It is a privilege for Tshepiso because he got the attention of the Gospel Music community soon after the release of the album. Sihlangene is amazingly received by gospel music fans all over the country, and the sales are escalating every day.
